Brian Saclini
Master Choreography 2022
Hi, my name is Brian Scalini. I am an Italian freelance choreographer and alumnus of the Master Choreography Programme at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden.
Before becoming a choreographer, I completed my academic studies with a bachelor’s degree in Product Design at the University of Bologna, Italy, to then take a different direction in pursuing my career as a professional dancer, dancing for the Tanzcompagnie Landesbühnen Sachsen and then freelancing in different projects. In 2018, I finally discovered my passion for choreography, finding in it a new way of combining dance with my previous knowledge of graphics and design. In 2020, in order to get an additional qualification, I decided to join the Master Choreography Programme.
During the two-year course, I had the possibility to deepen and enrich my knowledge in the field of dance-making on a practical and emotional level. Coming from a self-thought way of producing dance, I felt the need to have a more conscious way of approaching creations, a way that was not based entirely on my instinct but that could be mixed instead with technical and shared knowledge. Through the different modules of the Programme, I had the possibility to find new techniques for movement development through embodiment, new ways of composing considering the space in relation to the performers and the light, and improving my way of transmitting my material/my persona in the studio, and the idea of trusting the process contemplating also the possibility to fail.
Another important thing about the two-year course was the possibility to constantly exchange ways of doing art with small and selected multidisciplinary international group of students that shared this path with me. This constant exchange, together with the constant and essential guidance of Katharina Christl (Head of the Programme), opened up my view to possibilities that I would not have considered on my own.
Lastly, being part of the Palucca family gave me the chance to create new and ongoing connections with institutions, theatres, and artists for the creation of newly commissioned work.
During these past years, I had the chance to create for institutions such as the Theater Pforzheim, the Palucca University of Dance Dresden, and the Companhia de Dan?a de Almada, showcasing my own creations to festivals and venues such as Hellerau – European Centre for the Arts Dresden, the Oper Leipzig, the Semperoper Dresden, the Machol Shalem Dance House Israel, the Istanbul Fringe Festival, the Bauhaus Fest – Bauhaus Museum Dessau, and many others.
